The end is near for our ongoing Rise of the Runelords campaign, and yet, Karzoug continues to reach from his mountain perch and delay the group. In the most recent challenges, he summoned a snow storm that caused the cancellation of our latest game. Originally, we postponed until the following session, but we have several conflicts (and potentially more snow coming), so right now it looks like it will be February 3 before we can wrap up the storyline. I know the group is eager, and I am looking forward to pulling out all the villains tricks.

It was a bit of a scramble, but this year’s 8th grade science fair project is complete. Ended up occupying most of the last several days, but as a team effort, it was completed. Report, display, and samples all turned in. And kudos to George from his teacher for picking an original project – none of the typical volcanoes and such for us. The actual fair itself is next week, fingers crossed for how well he can present the material.

Good news and bad new with my travel plans – my son informed me today that his Science Fair project was due on Thursday (when we had understood it to be late January or early February). The good news is that I no longer need to travel – the bad news is now we are cramming a science project in over the next couple of days. Fortunately, the experimentation was done a while ago, we just need the observation and data analysis, but still not the way I would have preferred to spend the week.

I have been slacking off over this last week and not posting a daily note. I could claim it was work, but in reality it is distractions caused by video games. In this case, the new pre-release game Atlas (aka, Ark: Survival 2). An ocean-based game of pirates and adventure on the high-seas, I have been very pleasantly surprised by the detail involved with sailing. It is far less point and click, but much more of a coordinated effort with several players in the crew. Fortunately, between the wife and kids, we have an ample supply of sailors.

I have been enjoying the recent changes to mining in Elite Dangerous, in particular the seismic charges and particularly rare materials in the ice rings of various planets. My son and I have mined quite a bit in recent days. I opted to capture one such effort this morning, in the icy rings of the Bhotho system.

Continuing my X-Wing collection, with the last of the First Edition/Second Edition combo packs – ships that come with materials for both editions of the game. This one is the TIE Reaper, appearing in Star Wars Rebels, and featuring Director Krennic as a pilot option. Since I mainly fly Rebel, this won’t serve me much, but my son who favors Imperials will likely enjoy it. Mainly, I am just a completest, and find it hard to resist Rebel or Imperial ships. Given the options, not sure how much play time it will end up seeing, but it provides more options…

Going to be more than a few new miniature sets, thanks to the recent holidays. First up, we have a squad of Fleet Troopers, reinforcements for the Rebels (who desperately need more help). As usual, the models are detailed, but easy to assemble. Compared to my prior experience with Games Workshop, they might not be as customizable as possible, but they certainly assemble much faster, and look just as good. And as a side benefit, you don’t need to separate all the pieces from the mold sprue. This particular set will likely be a while before I can paint them…

Hopefully, you had a good holiday, of whatever form you celebrate, or at least are looking forward to a bright New Years. For me and the family, Christmas was enjoyable, most everyone seems to have received everything they wished for. Unfortunately, the big intended present for myself rather unexpectedly failed to show an appearance. Or more specifically, the box showed up, but it had apparently been substituted for an “exercise disk” at the Amazon shipping center. Bit of a disappointment when the box was opened, though I am sure someone somewhere had a very nice holiday. Blessing in disguise though…
