Experience and advancement will be milestone based, and universal for all players. Everyone will advance at the same stage and speed, regardless of involvement. Advancement is at the GM’s discretion however, and the criteria may or may not be obvious at the time. Any replacement characters will join the group at the same level as the group.
The following checklist is in effect for level increases:

- Update the character level to the new level
- If the new level is an even number (2, 4, 6, etc), choose 1 stat to earn a Potential increase. Choose 1 of the following options
- +5 to the Potential of a stat with a current Potential of 50 or less
- +3 to the Potential of a stat with a current Potential of 75 or less
- +1 to the Potential of a stat with a current Potential of 90 or less
- Statistics with a Potential of 90 or above cannot be increased with this method.
- Choose 2 of the 10 stats to roll a free Stat Gain. The increase is based on the Temporary stat value, per the adjacent table (Table 2-5b).
- Spend available Development Points. All characters earn 60 Development points per level, plus any existing remainder from prior levels. The current total is shown on the character sheet. Development points can be spent in any of the following options, in any order, but cannot exceed the available point total
- Additional Stat Gain rolls – for 4 DP, an additional roll can be made for any of the stats, including a stat already selected. This can be chosen as many times as desired
- Buy Off Flaws – if appropriate (check with the GM), you may spend DP to buy off existing character flaws and disadvantages. The cost is equal to the value of the flaw, and the full value must be spent at the same time.
- Purchase Talents – if appropriate (check with the GM, intentionally rare), you may spend DP to buy additional Talents. The cost is equal to the value of the talent, and the full value must be spent at the same time.
- Purchase Skill Ranks – the usual use of DP is to increase the skills of the character. This follows all normal rules and mechanics for acquiring skills. All skills require either a foundation (having 1 or more ranks already), or a teacher (anyone else with at least 1 rank), in order to be improved. Note that this intentionally limits spell abilities, since those skills are much rarer.
- Any remaining DP not spent carry over to the next level, they are not “lost”
- The character sheet will (should) automatically recalculate all of your modifiers, abilities, and bonuses. This is also a good time to make sure that your equipment list is current and accurate.
