• Not that I am using old-fashioned film, but I am happy to say that our first episode of the Age of Ashes is now edited, processed and otherwise finished. I have the file posted to YouTube, and scheduled to go live on Friday, 8/23 at 5 PM EST. In general, I think that is going to be my typical timing – posting every other week shortly before the next game. That gives me as long as possible to process the footage after each game, and hopefully stabilizes the publishing. Of course, if you are interested in following the group’s adventures,…

  • Been a while since I posted anything about my home server, but ended up having to a handle a distraction of the last day. Late last night, my home server decided to inform me that the boot drive was failing (a USB drive). After a reboot to validate, several of the applications ended up failing to restart, including our home media service. Fortunately, not enough had failed that I had corruption, and I was able to create a backup of the configuration. From there, I found another USB drive and re-installed the FreeNAS software (using the opportunity to upgrade to…

  • Part of my efforts to record and broadcast our gaming has been hampered by challenges around the specific cameras I have to use. Basically, although every camera has a configured framerate, each particular model is slightly different. For short lengths, the difference between 29.97 fps and 30.02 fps is not a big deal. But over a 4-5 hour span or longer, than leads to a sychronization issue of several seconds, which makes audio very distracting. Thru software, I can make some manual adjustments to try to correct it, but it is problematic and time consuming. My solution is to simply…

  • Characters are created, and the adventure has begun. The overall mix of options has been interesting – my initial concern was a bit of repetition the character process, but all characters are unique and different. Additional adventures may have challenges, but for now, there are more than enough choices. I will provide more detail, once the characters have their long term miniatures chosen and painted, but in the meantime, here is the short list of the characters: Pokey – Dwarven Laborer turned Fighter Goruza – Half-Orc Cleric of Sarenrae, suffering from Haunting Visions Dramze – Elven Hermit and Fey Sorcerer…

  • Our first session of Age of Ashes for Pathfinder second edition started on Sunday, and was a mixed success. The game itself was good – everyone seems to have adapted to the new rules and mechanics fairly well, and the story thus far has everyone engaged. The challenge was mainly with my juggling of the various pieces of technology, trying to add and enhance a variety of areas. As planned, we are recording with the intent to broadcast the sessions. The basic recording worked just fine, though I forgot to turn on the laptop screen recording, and I forgot my…

  • As part of our upcoming Age of Ashes campaign, we are going to try to add some virtual tabletop options, specifically the Fantasy Grounds tool. For those players with a laptop available, I will be asking them to install the client version, to be able to (hopefully) connect reliably to a GM session on my own computer. In concept, this will allow for some automation of the character actions, combat, etc, as well as the option for hidden messages and updates (previously we would text). It should also help with the recordings, since I can link OBS to capture specific…

  • The books are in hand, the characters are (mostly) completed, and we are just about ready to launch our 3rd major campaign with the Age of Ashes, using the new Pathfinder version 2. This Sunday will be our first game, though it will likely be a short session since we still have a couple of players that need their characters. Meanwhile, 7 of the 10 managed to create their personas during the recent GenCon, giving the group a custom collection of a Druid, Wizard, Cleric, Ranger, Rogue, Monk, and a Champion. With the remaining three, I expect at least one…

  • Another Gencon is done, and our group managed to survive without casualties. Only major challenge was the loss of my credit card after the first night, which fortunately was only missing, and not stolen. Caused a bit of a disruption, but we were able to adapt. Unfortunately, what I was interested in sold rather quickly. Of course, the big draw was Pathfinder second edition, and there was far more than they could sell for the weekend. However, Shadowrun (which was admittedly a pre-release) sold out by Friday morning, and I missed my chance. Similarly, the Outer Rim campaign for Star…
