Although our upcoming group for Rolemaster is progressing well, I have noticed that we have a lack of character names. As such, I present the first of the finished characters, in the form of the group’s Warrior Monk. The design is a bit unusual, monks are normally viewed as agile martial artists. In this case however the concept was a large, brutish fist-fighter. Think in terms of Fezzik, from The Princess Bride.
All the same skills and abities apply, though with less reliance on Agility and more on Strength. The Adrenal Defense skill in this case, a staple of the Monk, is described not so much as avoiding strikes, but as absorbing the strikes instead. A Fighter would certainly work for the same concept, but we found that the skill cost and mix was much more efficient for what the player ended up wanting to do. And with the high strength and low gear inventory, encumberence is not a big factor, allowing for the abilities to all shine during the game.
For a background, the monk is described as a general laborer and handyman in the village of Harthyn’s Hold – the unofficial bouncer that keeps the peace, or that someone can call to break up a fight when things get a bit too heated. He is friendly and kind, aware of his strength, but capable of damage when he puts his mind to it.
Of course, as is the nature of our games, some of this can and may change before the first session, but this is the cliff notes version that I am aware of. The full PDF version of the character sheet is below, if you care to look at the details, or as an example of our current custom character sheet.
