The second of our merry band is a rebuild of the season 2 character, though now a descendant. Pokey Darkstrike is a Dwarf Fighter, played by my son, who has only recently started playing roleplaying games with us. As a player, he is eager and learning quickly, though of course has challenges occasionally when the game is slow (as it tends to be with 10 players). Pokey is a thru and thru warrior, with a strong work ethic. His background is that of a laborer – spending long hours hauling heavy loads – which gives him an impressive encumbrance limit…

As we start to roll out our 3rd campaign, I am going to try to capture a bit of the characters as time permits. First up is Norm, the goblin rogue of the group, and a long time local of the town of Breachill. Norm is focused on Thievery, utilizing his enhanced dexterity to alternately pick pockets or strike vital back stabs at his enemies. Norm started out already in town, and had the advantage of everyone knowing his name (an 80’s reference we played up in game). Though the story hasn’t moved far yet, Norm has established a desire…

I have waited a long time, but I finally managed to get my copy of the Star Wars: Armada scale Super Star Destroyer. A limited edition model, it completely dwarfs anything else on the board. Pictured for scale is the prior giant, the Imperial Star Destroyer, and a tiny little X-Wing squadron, and my backdrop could not contain the entire length. By a rough count, it would take half the game (3 moves) for the x-wings to travel the full length of the behemoth. Stats are of course overboard, with six fire arcs boasting a bank of turbolasers, and at…

Had another chance to play some more X-Wing, or at least host the game (my son and one of our other gamers actually played). The battle was a straightforward 200 vs 200, with Scum vs Empire. On the Empire side, the squadron was Darth Vader and a TIE Advanced, supported by 4 TIE fighters (most with named pilots). For the Scum, we had Boba Fett in a generic Firespray, a Fang Fighter with Fenn Rau, and a basic Mining Guild TIE. The battle started off very basic – both sides of course lined up face to face. The TIE fighters…

Not that I am using old-fashioned film, but I am happy to say that our first episode of the Age of Ashes is now edited, processed and otherwise finished. I have the file posted to YouTube, and scheduled to go live on Friday, 8/23 at 5 PM EST. In general, I think that is going to be my typical timing – posting every other week shortly before the next game. That gives me as long as possible to process the footage after each game, and hopefully stabilizes the publishing. Of course, if you are interested in following the group’s adventures,…

Been a while since I posted anything about my home server, but ended up having to a handle a distraction of the last day. Late last night, my home server decided to inform me that the boot drive was failing (a USB drive). After a reboot to validate, several of the applications ended up failing to restart, including our home media service. Fortunately, not enough had failed that I had corruption, and I was able to create a backup of the configuration. From there, I found another USB drive and re-installed the FreeNAS software (using the opportunity to upgrade to…

Part of my efforts to record and broadcast our gaming has been hampered by challenges around the specific cameras I have to use. Basically, although every camera has a configured framerate, each particular model is slightly different. For short lengths, the difference between 29.97 fps and 30.02 fps is not a big deal. But over a 4-5 hour span or longer, than leads to a sychronization issue of several seconds, which makes audio very distracting. Thru software, I can make some manual adjustments to try to correct it, but it is problematic and time consuming. My solution is to simply…

Characters are created, and the adventure has begun. The overall mix of options has been interesting – my initial concern was a bit of repetition the character process, but all characters are unique and different. Additional adventures may have challenges, but for now, there are more than enough choices. I will provide more detail, once the characters have their long term miniatures chosen and painted, but in the meantime, here is the short list of the characters: Pokey – Dwarven Laborer turned Fighter Goruza – Half-Orc Cleric of Sarenrae, suffering from Haunting Visions Dramze – Elven Hermit and Fey Sorcerer…
