• June brings new releases for Star Wars: Legion, with the release of the Shadow Collective. This introduces a mercenary faction to the game, which can either be played independently or as various addons to existing forces and has a very strong thematic design. I of course had to acquire a set and have been working slowly to assemble the various figures. This of course has renewed my interest in Legion (and the other Star Wars games), with the hope to play some more in short order. In July, the original faction Battle Forces are released, which is a good time…

  • Another session of the Carrion Crown campaign, and the group finds themselves embroiled in a werewolf murder mystery. Deep in the Shudderwood, the group is staying at Ascanor Lodge, and indications are that a werewolf is on the grounds, killing a new victim each night. Video is now posted on YouTube, and ready for review. Major challenge this week was really technical. I attempted to trim the workload of the video system by utilizing NDI to share the player-screen. Unfortunately, the Ubuntu Linux based software has issues, and ended up locking up several times during the game. That piece will…

  • As theorized yesterday, we ran a few test scenarios with combat using our existing Warhammer characters, versus basic threats utilizing basic Rolemaster Arms Law mechanics. The general conclusion from the group (almost all of which had no prior experience) was that the combat was much improved. The flow of the rounds was much smoother, the mechanics easier to understand, and the detail in the combat much improved. The number of criticals was of course increased, and in a few cases made major shifts in the combat but felt to be in line with the spirit of Warhammer. From a functional…

  • Been pondering a game mechanics change today, specific to our Warhammer FRP campaign. Long ago, we used to play Rolemaster extensively, our group was particularly fond of the more realistic and deadly tone of combat, and the flexibility of the spell systems. However, the character generation mechanics always felt lacking, so over the years we heavily tweaked and modified those pieces. The latest iteration was a heavily changed Pathfinder-based ruleset, which kept the same flavor, but was much more modernized. On the other hand, the current version of Warhammer Fantasy, the 4th edition, has a very robust and details character…

  • After numerous months of streaming our live games on Twitch, I have opted to drop the parallel effort and move entirely over to YouTube Live. Functionally, Twitch is much more capable and feature full, but there simply is no audience for our gaming materials and I don’t post actual video games. As such, with all our content, we have managed to only find one or two subscribers. Generally, whenever one adds, another one drops. Since Twitch also doesn’t keep the videos archives for more than a couple weeks, there isn’t much content. Instead, I do some basic editing, then post…

  • As planned, our Call of Cthulhu one-shot, The Dare, was able to be held on Saturday. By this point, the first two parts of the session should be available on YouTube, if anyone has any interest in the experience. Unfortunately, the start time was a bit delayed, but everyone had a lot of fun, and we managed to finish the adventure in a single (long) session. It was a rather late 3 AM when the few survivors managed to crawl out of the haunted house. YouTube “The Dare” Playlist The total game time came in at about 9 hours, for…

  • A project this week was to build an enhancement to our gaming table setup, specifically to add LED lights along the edge. In prior games, the screen we use is rather difficult to see due to glare from the lights. If we turn off the lights however, the players can’t read character sheets. This was a compromise, allow the lights to be off, while still providing a source of light for the reference. Construction is a simple build of a frame from scrap plywood, with a sloped piece from a 2×4. On the lower surface, I used self-adhesive LEDs, strung…

  • The scheduling for games is a bit disrupted this week due to several conflicts in calendars. No Warhammer FRP game this evening or next week, and our regular Pathfinder game this Sunday. However, in its place, we will be holding a one-shot for Call of Cthulhu, using the scenario, The Dare. The setting is Halloween night in 1985, in a town in rural middle-America. The town itself is irrelevant since the adventure is set in an old house, rumored to be haunted. The group is a set of young kids in the 10 to 12 years age group, who have…
