• The Watchtower model is completed, and primed, and now ready for final painting. The assembly worked out very well, and it ties in nicely with the prior build of the individual pieces. So much so, that after priming, it is actually difficult to tell which one is which. Next up, I am working on a much smaller model of a stone cottage, and then a large print of a stone barn. Both I intend to use as gaming terrain, and possibly in the RPG sessions. I will also likely print out some of the similar terrain in ruined configurations –…

  • Continuing my diorama style thumbnails for the Age of Ashes episodes, highlight some of the terrain and painted figures. Planning on adding a few of the group’s painting efforts, once I can hold on to them post game, but for now it is rather basic. This does however give me the opportunity to continue my own modeling, and more importantly, a deadline for new material every other week.

  • Managed to enjoy a game of Star Wars: Armada this weekend, introducing a couple of new players to the game. The fleets were fairly basic – I intentionally limited the number of upgrade cards to make it easier to absorb. However, this lead to quite a few ships on the field, since less upgrades certainly adds a lot of ships. The mission we ended up with was Navigational Hazards, which was one that I had not experienced yet. My conclusion though is that it really seemed irrelevant as a mission – each time we moved the obstacles, it ended up…

  • In a bit of good news/bad news, Fantasy Flight just posted a full list of their new January releases. This brings some long awaited expansions for several games I collect and play, but also brings a newly lengthened wish list for the same. Star Wars: Legion I am neutral on for these new pieces – not interested in Clone Wars and don’t need another Skywalker or Vader. But the X-Wing ships and cards, and especially the Armada ships, I am rather eager for. Now to start saving the coins to be able to add them to the fleets. https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2020/1/31/available-now-january-24-1/

  • Having arrived home again, I compiled and digitally assembled the second floor of the Watch Tower project. As before, a bit of re-scaling to make the assembly easier, resizing down by about 1.5%. The new model is estimated at 21 hours and 52 minutes by the software, so it will likely be a 24 hour+ run. As a side note, I weighed the first floor model, and the estimate actually a bit high – Simplify3D claimed 168 grams, the final model came in 164 grams. Based on this, the second floor estimate of 189 grams should be pretty close as…

  • I am out of town yet again for work, so my access is limited, but I am able to report that the big print job of the first floor of the watch tower was successful – no layer shifts or other issues. The total print job was estimated at 18 hours and 21 minutes, it ended up at 21 hours and 28 minutes (an extra 17%) – but that is still a far bit shorter than the total print time of all the components individually. Estimated material is 168 grams, have not yet had a chance to weigh out the…

  • In our Age of Ashes campaign, we are rapidly approaching the conclusion of Chapter 1 with the group, which means its time for me to start putting together material for Chapter 2. Depending on how fast the group progresses, Chapter 2 will be starting either at the end of session 13, or likely early in session 14. To that end, and as part of my slow evolution of the content, I am looking for any constructive feedback regarding the video log of the game. What works and what doesn’t work? Is it too long, or too boring, and if so,…

  • In my ongoing effort to 3d print terrain for gaming, I am continuing to evolve the previous tower project. I was able to print all of the files, enough to assemble a piece-meal tower with component parts – all of which fit well and had good quality. That was shortly before the holidays, and my printer upgrade. However, about half-way thru that project, I decided that it would be more practical to combine all the pieces in software, into a single solid assembly. Since I really have no plans of disassembling the pieces, a single solid model makes just as…
