Off-Schedule Legion

We ended up being a bit behind schedule this week with our Star Wars Legion battle report. Originally, this was planned to be recorded on April 20, but scheduling challenges pushed it back to April 21. Then AMG decided to announce brand new changes in rules and points to the game earlier in the day, which caused both forces to be restructured. In the end, we did end up playing a game and recording the session on April 21, though it was with only basic understanding of the new rules.

For this battle, we are highlighting Grand Admiral Thrawn for the Empire, and Hondo Ohnaka and a full squad of Weequay Pirates aligned with the Rebels. Continuing to experiment with the new battle conditions, this one was using the rules for Payload. Initially, I understood it to be a newer version of “deliver the bomb”, which it sort of it, but it is much more closely aligned to a simultaneous set of three games of tug-of-war. Both sides fight over three objectives, and control provides points, and moves them towards the enemy side. Crossing the border scores bonus points, securing the game.

However, due to the give and take nature of the game, the secondary objective of Sweep and Clear ended up being more significant early in the game – Payload is only a point or two for most turns.

Overall, I like the mission objective – its a nice change from “engage and kill” the enemy styles, but it will certainly take some tactics and learning to understand how it can be won reliably.
