Staining the table

Another update on the gaming table – most of the panels at this point have received their stain layer. This is using Minwax oil-based wood stain, in Dark Walnut coloring – which is the same one used for TV cabinet. For the most part, the stain has gone on very easily – simply wipe it on evenly, then let it sit for 24 hours. Yesterday I managed to do one side of the center panels, today I did the other side and the end panels. Tomorrow I can do the end panel flip side, which should finish the stain. I just need to pick up another can, I finally finished up my half-quart little pot – the stain goes quite a long way. In truth, I could probably finish the two pieces with what I have left, but I really dont want to run out mid-panel, and risk a color matching issue. I am specifically not staining the runners and rails, they will not be visible, and I dont want the stain rubbing on the table surface itself.

For finishing, my plan is a water-based polycrylic from Minwax as well. For the TV screen, I used a beeswax and tung oil combination, which works well to soften and protect the wood oils, but doesnt really help with heavy activity – which for the screen is fine. For the table surface though I want to go a lot more durable, between dice, pencils, pens, and such I expect it to take a bit more of a beating. The polycrylic apparently goes on very clear, and with no color change, so the basic walnut color should still be as shown. The plan is for 3 or more coatings, starting tomorrow evening, with 220 grit sanding in between layers. Per the manufacturer, the dry time between layers is only 2 hours, though I expect I will give it closer to 3 or 4.
