Wildlife

Early this summer, we opted to finally move and started the process to build a new home. Late in November, this was completed, and we started the process to move in. Now mid-January, and I would say we are fairly solidly entrenched in the new location. All boxes have been moved in (many still requiring unpacking), and we are slowly becoming acustomed to the new location. It in an interesting experience – plenty of construction still going on in the area, so always lots of trucks and dust. Other families are moving in frequently as well, the neighbors across the street just moved in this last weekend. And a host of new local issues to deal with or be entertained by – there is an ongoing “mail thief” issue which the neighborhood watch is up in arms about – we just routinely bring our mail in and chuckle.

Most interesting seems to be the difference in wildlife. Old house, tons of miscellaneous birds, and the occasional goose thanks to the pool, along with cats and a few frogs. New house, no birds at all (except an owl at night), but our backyard is visited by a herd of deer frequently. Still have the occasional cat out on the street, and the geese are much more numerous flying overhead. Despite the forest, not a single squirrel too, which I find strange. And the local flock of turkey vultures is migrating thru the trees towards our new neighborhood.

Likely once the construction finishes up in a year, nature will return to a seemingly normal state. Until then, I am curious about the changes in wildlife, for as small of a location change as we made.
