Watch Tower Assembly

Over the holidays, thanks to the new printer, I managed to finally finish printing the various individual pieces for the Watch Tower project. The last big piece was the roof tile – all one single piece and a rather long print. With my old printer, I just didn’t trust it enough to risk that length of a job.

Fortunately, with the Prusa, the print was no issue at all, and the final result is rather nice and detailed.

My next steps will be to paint it, and then likely glue all the components together into a solid block for each floor – the tile locking clips are a good idea in concept, but they tend to leave the construction rather flimsy. Since I don’t really plan to disassemble and re-assemble into different configurations, a solid piece will work fine for me. However, painting may be easier if the pieces are still separated.

As an alternative, I have been considering re-printing the entire assembly, but with each floor connecting into a single piece via Tinkercad. This presents its own challenges – the virtual models don’t truly line up cleanly with each other – but does have the advantage of no need to glue. I also slightly scaled down the pieces by about 2% in the X and Y axis, primarily to line up 51.7 mm pieces with 50 mm, to make alignment much easier. However, that means that the existing pieces won’t match up – though as separate models it likely will not be noticeable.

In the end, I expect I will have two Watch Towers, for use in gaming.
