Pathfinder – Kingmaker

As we approach the Gencon convention, we are wrapping up our second season of our ongoing Pathfinder campaign with the Kingmaker adventure path. Chapter 1 has not progressed as quickly as I had hoped, so with only one game remaining, we are going to skip ahead a bit to the finale for our last session in two weeks. After that, we start preparations for Season 3, with the Age of Ashes storyline and Pathfinder version 2.

In our last session, the group had begun an assault on the Mite caves underneath the Old Sycamore tree in the middle Kamelands. Individually not much of a threat, with their pets, the Mites had slowly worn down the group. As we started this session, the large party, who had previously separated, managed to come together again in the final chamber of the mites – where their chieftain and remaining warriors remained. This fight was fairly fast – the group had grown resistant with lucky rolls to the Mite’s Doom ability, and several of the small critters fell to an initial volley of arrows. The only real threat came from the giant cave tick that the leader of the Mite’s rode into combat, which quickly attached itself to the party’s cleric. The group had great difficulty hitting this beast, until the ranger shot the Mite off its back, leaving it riderless. From there, the combined efforts of the party quickly destroyed the vermin.

Having defeated the Mites, the group recovered the religious totem that their recent friend, Mikmek, the kobold hero, was looking for – along with a small scattering of treasures. From there, they headed towards the Kobold village, which they had determined was at war with the Mites – and to which Mikmek desired to return for the reward. Once they arrived, the kobolds (with a good word from Mikmek), hungrily allowed the group to enter and stand before their chieftain, but in a surprise twist, the chieftain smashed the idol, and declared the group the saviors of the kobolds. It was up to them to defeat “Tartuk”, who had brought a curse on the kobolds and was attempting to seize control. With dozens of kobolds following (and many tiny spears), the group was taken further into the warren, where they were volun-told to face and defeat Tartuk.

Though this caused more than a little apprehension in the group, Tartuk turned out to be little threat to the group. After a bit of religious posturing and threats from Tartuk, the barbarian grew bored, and charged across the room, resisting poor Tartuk’s Cause Fear spells. Very quickly Tartuk was on the defensive and surrounded, his raven familiar trying to come to his aid, only to be obliterated by a critical hit from the ranger. In only a couple of rounds, the “great” Tartuk (actually only a kobold with magic) was defeated, and the group victorious.

From here, we fast-forwarded the timeline, revealed a few spoilers for the rest of Chapter 1, and ultimately set up the final assault on the Stag Lord’s fort. We advanced the group to level 3, as well as allowed them to purchase upgrades based on quests and treasure located – so other than the rest of the story details, everything should be in line with the timeline. For our final session next week, they will attempt to subdue the Stag Lord, and finally free the Kamelands as originally intended.
