Charter of Authority

I always try to do a little extra for the start of a campaign – sometimes I have managed to put together a short video summarizing the history, sometimes I create various props or other items.

In the case of our Kingmaker campaign, I opted for the prop approach, not having much time to prepare a full video. To that end, part of the premise of the campaign is the group being granted Royal authority to explore and settle the lands. To this end, they of course require some sort of formal paperwork, so I created a Charter for each player. Admittedly, not that original, and the text is included in the storyline itself, but I printed it on a bit fancier paper, folded them carefully in a historical binding pattern, and sealed each with a wax seal.

During our recent session, once the group was given the basic background, I presented each player with the charter, with a warning that this was their sole letter of authority. At some point in the future, the Nobility may send agents to check up on the group, at which point they would have to be able to present their legal paperwork (ie, don’t lose the prop).
