3d printer = problem solved

As part of my design for the gaming table, I have several cutouts in the surface to accommodate cables and wires for the electronics. This allows me to have a mostly seamless surface, and still have the digital table and microphones – without cables going thru the table below, or on the surface. However, when we play other strategy games – Legion, Armada, etc. – it leaves several gaps in the hard surface. Although they are visually covered up with the game surface, that doesn’t do anything for the actual hole. In several games, pieces ended up on the gaps, and the pressure moved the board or toppled the figures. What I needed was a way to fill in the holes when not needed.

In steps 3d printing, and a bit of quickly measuring. After doing some basic math, and sorting out a rudimentary design, I jumped into Tinkercad and came up with some STLs. They are not what I would consider “optimized”, but then they don’t need to be – they are a simple solution for a basic problem. And fortunately each prints quickly, so I was able to test them out immediately. Each piece is plenty solid for my needs, providing once again a solid flat surface for the other games to be played. Only 10-15 minutes to design, and a couple hours to print, and the problem is solved.
