Fun with stamps

A while ago, I posted a wax stamp handout I had created for our Pathfinder campaign – some formal writs of authority the group was granted. At the time, I ended up with a compromise solution – a basic store-bought stamp of a generic pattern and “flexible” wax. The result was workable, but not quite the feel I was going for.

Since then, I did a bit of research, and have acquired proper “brittle” wax. I have also come up with a design for a custom stamp, which I can print in the 3d printer. Gave the new materials a test today, and unfortunately the PLA option was a total loss – the PLA was printed way too thin and the wax was far too hot when I pressed it – resulting in a molten mess of plastic and wax.

The second attempt (using the store-bought metal stamp) was much more successful – the impression is clear and detailed. Arguably I used a bit too much wax, but that is not much of a concern (especially since I can remelt it).

Meanwhile, I am re-printing the PLA custom version, in a much more robust format, to attempt it again. From some more searching, I also need to add a layer of oil to the stamp (to help the release).

If this doesn’t work either, then perhaps I will try a resin casting option as an alternative.
